Late Night Jazz feat. Raphael Semmes + Company

Township Jazz Festival Preview Goes Late

Much like tech, music is based in classical rules that are moved around, tinkered with, experimented on, and crafted to make something new out of something that existed before. Maybe in no other genre of music is this the case as in Jazz. As the tech program comes to a close get a preview of the cool that was born here in Mississippi.

The Late Night Jazz set is headed by Raphael Semmes, the architect of the Township Jazz Festival and Jackson Free Press 2017 "Best Jazz Musician."

Keynote: Chicago, No Longer (Tech's) Second City

Nick Moran of New Stack Ventures and the Full Ratchet

Nick Moran is a co-founder and Managing Director of New Stack Ventures and Moran Capital Partners, as well as the host of one of the nation's leading podcasts on venture investing, The Full Ratchet. Through his keynote, Nick will be exploring Chicago's rise from a down-list tech city to now being considered on par with Silicon Valley, NYC, and Boston as an A-List Tech City.

Nick has held positions in Mergers and Acquisitions, Strategy, Product Management and Product Development.  Nick has experience across a range of verticals, including Industrial Automation & Robotics, Aerospace and Defense, Renewable Energy and Water Analytics.

He holds an MBA degree from the University of Virginia, Darden School of Business Administration, and a Bachelors of Science in Operations Management and Business Process Management from Indiana University, Kelley School of Business.

His path toward venture began while working in M&A. He spent time employing a private equity-centric approach toward large-asset acquisition. This function, with aggressive bottom-line tactics, was not the ideal fit. Rather, Nick enjoyed the “Open Innovation” side of M&A, where early-stage technologies were cultivated and growth was the focus.

This led Nick to take a new role leading disruptive innovation.  He obtained funding and an R&D team of ~15 to re-invent the process for water analytics testing.  This hardware device + consumable + software product (razor/razorblade+SaaS) automated the measurement of compounds in water.  It went on to become one of the most successful products in the company’s history.

Since this experience, Nick has focused on investing in entrepreneurs tackling similar problems. He has also helped entrepreneurs and VC's alike through his nationally renowned podcast The Full Ratchet (www.fullratchet.net). In over 125 podcasts, Nick has explored venture capital investing through the stories and interviews of top venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.

You can listen to Nick and learn more about startup investing, whether as a VC or as an entrepreneur, by following The Full Ratchet on the Apple iTunes Store: Subscribe. You can follow Nick on Twitter @thefullratchet.

Lunchtime Jazz: Hosted by Rooster's

When I moved to Jackson one of my most favorite things was WJSU 88.5FM, Jazz by Jackson State. In my 1996 sedan, it was old school radio for me. WJSU keeps you cool and current and through their music program they are teaching the future of America's music. Lunchtime Jazz will be featuring an up and coming high school jazz program from Yazoo County and their jazz guitar ensemble.
